The history of the garter removal and toss is closely related to the bouquet toss. Like the bouquet toss, the origins of the garter removal and toss can be traced back to the middle ages in 14th century France. At the time Europe was in the midst of a plague called the Black Death. It’s estimated that every other person in Europe died from the disease and the people had no explanation for the cause of such widespread death. The lack of science based medicine led people to put their faith in lucky objects. Wild and unruly guests destroyed many wedding gowns, and in the process, hurt the brides. In an effort to avoid the chaos, clever brides and grooms began throwing the bouquet, garter and other personal items as a way to appease and distract their overzealous guests.
The garter was also a symbol of the brides chastity. So any man that got the brides garter and gave it to his love, secured her faithful devotion. At the time, it was customary for wedding guests to accompany the newlyweds into the bedroom. As you can imagine, neither the bride or groom was thrilled with the prospect of guests in the bedroom, so the tradition of the garter removal and toss became firmly established as a way to put the guests off from entering the bedroom.
Like so many old traditions, the meaning is lost to, or evolves over time. In spite of it’s origins, the garter removal and toss is still a popular wedding activity. Our list of over 90 top garter removal and toss songs is full of songs from most major music genres.
