Cake Cutting Songs

The tradition of the cake cutting is one of the oldest wedding traditions on record. Like many centuries old traditions, it has grown and evolved into what we recognize as the modern cake cutting ceremony. Dating back to the Roman Empire, the tradition was to break the “cake” over the brides head thus insuring her fertility and their children’s good fortune. At the time, cakes as we know them today did not exist so the Romans used loafs of bread. It’s believed that the modern tradition of smashing the cake in each others face grew out of this ancient rite of passage.

Through the ages, cakes were created and the tradition of stacking was born. In this ritual, the cakes were stacked into a tall mound which the newlyweds would then attempt to kiss over. If they kissed without knocking over the stack of cakes they would be blessed with good luck, prosperity and lots of children. Our modern tradition borrows from the stacking tradition as can be seen by our elaborate multi-layered cakes.

Over the last several centuries, the tradition of the white wedding cake to hold. Like the white wedding gown, the white cake came to symbolize the brides innocence and purity. Because the cake was known as the brides cake, the color and size of it was also a sign of the wealth of the brides family. Only families of significant wealth could afford the largest and purest white wedding cakes due to the fact that refined sugar was expensive and difficult to produce. Like many of the other traditions, the size and elaborateness of the cake is a status symbol to this day.

As cakes became bigger and more elaborate, the tradition of the bride and groom cutting the cake together was born. Not only was it more practical to do this, it also symbolizes their ability to support each other in their new life together. This sentiment is also reflected in the ritual of feeding each other a piece of the cake.
